(The set at a glance)

Costing only £12.99 Lego’s Halloween Barn continues Lego’s seasonal trend of releasing cheaper, spooky, Halloween sets.

The set comes with 5 numbered bags, an instruction booklet (with no points QR code), and a yellow 8×16 plate. Also included in the 205 pieces is one of Lego’s iconic skeleton Minifigures.
I’m glad they added a Minifigure to this build as without it I think the set would have been lacking – especially for younger audiences that might want to actively play with the build. Additionally, for those so inclined, the Halloween Barn does include a few play features, such as movable barn doors, and working window shutters.

The overall premise of the build is (Spoilers) – that the Barn is actually alive! Once fully built, the barn doors and window shutters can be opened or closed depending on if you want to display the scary interiors.

I have to say I quite like the novelty of this simple yet effective play feature. Combining the set with one extra Minifigure really opens up the play opportunities, allowing for a more dynamic and interactive experience than previous Halloween sets. I even created a short two-image story using The Brick Tribune’s mascot – Newspaper Kid! This comic story showcases how versatile the new set can be.

My biggest issue with the build is the lack of a back section. It’s not so noticeable with the ‘eye’ section, however, if the barn doors are opened you can see all the way through the build.
Whilst this gap does let you put Minifigures through the build, it does also make it harder to view the teeth and tongue elements.

In the image above I’ve added some grey bricks just behind the teeth and tongue. This is probably just a personal preference but I think it makes the horror elements of the barn easier to see.

Additionally the back of the barn features a cauldron and green bottle. I like the inclusion of these decorative story elements, however, when the set is displayed they can’t be seen. Luckily the price per piece of this set (£0.06) is very low for Lego standards so I’ll probably just end up using these elements in other builds.

In conclusion I think Lego’s latest Halloween themed set is a nice change of pace from the previous seasonal sets. 2022’s 40570 LEGO Halloween Cat and Mouse and 2021’s 40497 LEGO Halloween Owl are nice display pieces but pale in comparison to 40721 Halloween Barn’s play features.

With only a £1 price increase from 2022 Halloween Barn offers tremendous value for money at a time where Lego seems to be only increasing in price!
For seasonal or Halloween themed collectors – set number 40721 Halloween Barn presents a great addition to the collection. (Pick it up here)
