Lego unveils Blacktron Renegade 10355 as latest Retro Space set

,

Fans of Lego’s retro space themes will be happy next year – as Lego has unveiled their latest retro-redo. 10355 Blacktron Renegade is following on from 2022’s Galaxy Explorer. Releasing early to Lego Insiders on January 1st 2025!

Coming in at 1,151 pieces for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99,99 and 3 Minifigures. That’s one extra Mini compared to the original 1987 set! On top of that the 2025 edition features a cute little Blacktron robot. I find the price point of £0.08 per piece fairly average so it’s good to know Lego isn’t totally overcharging nostalgic fans.

As someone born post millennium I don’t have the same nostalgic attachment as older Lego fans. For me, this is especially evident in the Minifigure selection. Lego has been incredibly faithful to the original 1987 Minifigures, however, like the original set, each fig is identical.
Personally I think it would have been nice to see at least one Minifigure have a slightly different Torso or even some leg printing.
This could have been a good compromise to old and new fans giving some variations plus a good way to expand your classic Blacktron collection.

That being said I’m still tempted to pick-up this set. I find the asymmetrical design really eye-catching and the contrasting yellow / black colour scheme visually appealing!

Like the original set, 10355 Blacktron Renegade is designed to be somewhat modular.

The set includes opportunities to swap cockpit, lights, and thruster placement.

Also included in the set are some smaller builds, including a planet-rover, two wing-mounted space speeders, and two energy canisters.

Also available on the Lego Builder app are instructions on how to rebuild the Renegade into the 1980s Blacktron Alienator. I could see classic Space mega fans picking up multiples in order to create both builds!

As a final note – I have to say I’m a fan of Lego releasing updated ‘retro’ sets. Fans wishing to gain access to retro sets often have to part with large sums of money. As of writing a sealed original 1987 Blacktron Renegade is selling for over $1,000 on Bricklink! Even unsealed but complete sets often go for around $200.

I’m excited to see what other classic sets Lego will release next. I’d love to see an Ice Planet remake or a new Bionicle!

Will you be picking up the new 10355 Blacktron Renegade when it releases on January 1st 2025? Let us know in the comments below!
